The flying saucer is a tad bit over the top, but aliens are totally not out of place in a Lovecraft tinged game like Salem.

Aliens in Lovecraft have nothing to do with UFOs or little green men from Mars.
It's all about the cosmic horror of the old gods, the unfathomable knowledge which when confronted by men turns them mad. While American literature is often linked to a return to the sources, to a time before Eve ate the apple, a time of ignorant bliss linked with Nature, Lovecraft portrays the opposite. What would happen if mankind had the ultimate knowledge? And his answer: madness.

Yes, and where are those elder gods from? JohnCarver didn't introduce little green men, he has a crashed alien spacecraft. Lovecraft has aliens visiting earth all the damn time, he just doesn't called them Aliens.

But they didn't come in UFOs! They came through portals summoned by their mad followers, using impious books such as the Necronomicon.

I recall jc talking about a middle ground that was neither darkness, or light, would be cool if they had actual Lovecraft monsters there.

The only story I can think of like that is the Dunwich Horror and even then I'd only say maybe as it's more likely he was summoning something that already lay dorminat beneath the mountain. (I mean I could be wrong, I've only read maybe half of Lovecrafts stories so far) Most of the Elder Gods got here by flying through space. Ok granted most didn't need space ships, but some had special suits. I can think of one story, the Color Out of Space, that is specificall about an alien space ship crash landing in rural New England. It ain't a flying saucer, but I've already agreed that's a bit much.

Yes, The Color Out of Space contained a 'space ship'. I believe The Whisperer in Darkness contained references to one? The whisperer was going to be transported to the tenth planet by the spacefaring creatures in that story who could actually push against the aether with their wings and 'fly' through space. For the most part, Lovecraft's aliens did seem able to just travel through space with no real mention of how they did it. Or they were on Earth already with no mention of how they got here.

I don't know what any of this has to do with Thor's Shield though.

Is this really where you guys want to take the game? Most of us were hoping for a sort of gothic/alchemic/witchcraft game with the occasional native raid, a sort of wilderness game with monsters, rare flowers and butterflies. You guys really need to re-look at this monument I think, before it goes public.

Aliens are just jumping the shark.

Still, nothing suggest that it will go beyond the level of a far-flung and minor easter egg. How many actually make a trip to the place if they are not interested in it? Some folks will die of old age before they actually see it.
In short: I don't see it as a big deal or great lore-breaking addition.

As long as it wasn't a phone booth or the delorian, and I can agree with this much, I have certainly never been there or seen it on my own while exploring.
