why should one join a town?

Postby gagarin » Tue Mar 24, 2015 4:47 pm

i've noticed that in every guide author suggest to do so, but since i am able to setup multiple brick and plank walls with lots of braziers all by my own or even build my own townbell, Is there a real necessity to find some random people and join their town?
what are the other reasons?

Teamwork, friends, people to play with and help etc.. There are lots of reasons to join a town or make your own

Steel making.
More resources. Cumbersome processes less annoying.
More people= easier hunt, friends to protect, justice trips, talking ****, having fun
Salem is a MMO
Witch protection.
Faster regaining after death.
Beer and BBQ.
Drama.
Mining.
What will you tell people after playing Salem? will you do a "I do this and that...." or start the story with "I know a guy..."?
You thought I quit.

this depends. the outcome will be the same in case these guys do know what they are doing

actually i'm bad at befriending people

and eventually they stop playing so you end up being alone again anyway

It is more then possable to build great defences and provide yourself with as much security as a town, it just takes a lot of work.

Other benafits are gaining friends, sharing the work load, trading exess produce to others in the village and just having fun. This is after all an MMO and you can miss a whole side of the game simply by farmvilling (I would say Harvist moon or rune factory would be more aplicable but less people know of them). Traveling with a group of people is also much safer then on your own if you want to make a hunting venture into the darkness - or even just to forage.
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

To build great defenses indeed. The key word is defense. You can defend your claim efficiently even when alone but no matter what you do if there are 5-6 people outside your walls there is no way you can win. You may not lose but you'll never win because if you get outside your walls to take the fight to them you'll get ganked and killed. Having friends to play with allows to defend your town by bringing 5 more people with you when you really need to keep those pesky raiders at bay. IF one of you is killed you can follow the scents and bring sweet justice.

Even if you are a peaceful player, I know I am, and if you are a dedicated player who tries to make a name for yourself you'll eventually end up with enemies. Better have some allies then.

But what about negative point in joining a town?

It's risky. You might fall prey to some ill intended persons wishing only harm to you. Often people see the risk of welcoming new players in a town but I also see the risk for the people joining. It's all about trust and getting to know one another. But in the end it's worth it.

It's perhaps not as personally rewarding. Or so it seems. You might earn as much silver because you feel compel to give that rare item you just found to your neighbor who is looking for one. But it's all about giving and receiving. If you give you'll receive.

It's a commitment. If you join a town you are less likely to stop playing altogether because you'll feel the need to stay and help your comrades. If you are an addict like me it might play some tricks on your personal life ;)

In the end, if you want to experience the true nature of Salem you need to live in a town. It's a political game, you need to live with other people and get to know them. But it's also your choice. If all you want to do is stay in your claim and farm, feel free to do so.

Hope that helps,

Tynendir Endeniel.

To get backstabbed. Living on your own is perfectly viable, I've been doing it since this world started and I'm doing fine. Any productivity gains from specialization are offset by the administrative overhead of coordination. And if you really need something done by someone with a high specific proficiency, The Trade Wind works just fine.

The best reason to join can be three reasons.

I. Resources; such as raw materials and utilities.

II. Trade. You can make a lot of silver simply by being within a village's walls.

III. Back-stab everyone and have a nice new shiny base to live in. The best home is one you did not build in there games; especially since you can destroy their hearth fire.

Don't go in for all the friendship and teamwork. That is usually useless. The only thing that matters is if you can fill a role or not. Such as farming, hunting, etc etc. Just pull your weight and then you can be gity and friendly.
Keep calm and stay peachy.

I've never played with other people and I've been here on and off since the first closed beta that the public could apply too, and I can tell you that being alone is a significant disadvantage. It takes f-ing ages to set up a decent base on your own, and what you have to do is basically the same few task over and over again till its done, which more often than not leads to you just giving up. Playing with people as everyone above has said means that the work load is spread out and pretty much everything is significantly easier. Also a large functioning town is way cooler than a large functioning base in my opinion.
I think I have a hat problem.
