my first batch was a cream ale, it was all extract and came out pretty good. first partial grain batch was a guiness clone, you partial brew roasted malt into wort, then add extracts to finish it.. full grain though, you cant really go wrong with a wheat beer. amber lagers are fairly forgiving too, most of the flavor comes from whatever hops you are using (personaly I love cascade, has a nice sour floral smell to it, almost exactly like kush to be blunt about it)

Well it depends what you mean by starter kit as there are many kinds some come with declorination tablets, hyrdrometers, wing cappers, etc and then some come with the bare minimum for the beginning home brewer they vary from plastic to glass, and so on so it really depends where you buy it from that makes it a starter kit.

Ah ok I got ya. I was reading a bit on reddit and it seems really fun. I'll do some more research for equipment tonight at work.

If you are up for it look in your local area's, might be your county at best, hardware stores that are family owned; they tend to be geared to this audience unless you have a craft brewery store in your county or town. If I can fish out the damn book I bought last year on home brewing, good book and has some to the point information, I'll make a note of it here.

You don't really need much to get into this. You can damn well make it all in a pressure-cooker, let alone a 5 gallon glass jar (Don't use plastic as I still don't trust it even if it is safer than the past products used.), to a simple bottle if you wanted to. It is that simple. :p

I'll go look for that book as it helped me a good chunk when I got into this last summer. You'll never go back to commercial beer that is for sure!

I'll stick with shine' and everclear. :3

Anyway here is the book.
The Complete Joy of Home Brewing 3rd edition by Charlie Papazian
ISBN: 0-06-053105-3

The guy is a nuclear engineer who brews his own brew as a hobby. Good book in my opinion and it comes with a few recipes to get you started. Not overly complex either.

One of the sites associated with it that also has a forum dedicated to everything home brew related: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/ & https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/forum/

Omg yea I had that book wrote down. It's highly praised as being one of the best books out there.

Best moonshine I've ever had was from my connection back in Kentucky. Mason jar filled with his family's recipe and pineapples. There was ZERO kick to it. Smoothest thing I've ever had.

I'll have to check around San Antonio and Austin. I'm sure someone out there has a homebrew store

Good luck with the mead. Best original alcoholic beverage from the cradle of all civilizations continued to this day. It bumps right up there with the origins of humanity; and its delicious to! Honey will be the expensive part as we all know how much that can cost in the U.S. if you don't buy commercial honey.

Yeah the honey is going to be killer. I can get a good deal at the Mexican market sometimes here in San Antonio. You can get alot of honey REALLY cheap sometimes.
