I heard you needed to mine a specific type of mine-able wall after letting a fire burn out in front of it in order to go down a level. Does anyone have any example of how this looks so I know what to keep an eye out for?

Are they literally going to be nothing but black? I have a torch on so even with that they'll just be pure black walls?

Those aren't black walls. Bring some light if you have troubles seeing. Black wall is black. What you have on the screen is gray. Also, you cannot mine the black wall so you can always check this way. If you light a fire near it, after it goes off the black wall will turn into normal wall that you can see on your screen. Then you can mine it and you have a chance to find entrance to the lower level
