If you are alone don't try to put more than iron at the same time or you won't have time to hammer it at the trip hammer, it will turn to dross. However when you take out your first iron bloom, you can put another iron bar inside. This will allow you to chain hammer iron bloom as by the time you finish hammering one the iron bar will have turned to bloom.
Hope that helps.
We did one forge run yesterday with townie. the cost of makin 20 wrought iron was 22 pig iron and 300 coal, 20 iron to smelt, 2 for the tongs and 300 coal to keep it going. however we managed easily to use all three slots, as he operated with coal and i operated trip hammer. if you think of it, there is a way how you can use all 3 slots to smelt and have enough time to trip em all alone

so yeh, it's a 2 man job
if you insist doing it alone, then actually you can. just keep coal and iron storage close and work with smelting one bar at time to get hang of it and when you feel confident, there is enough time to operate it with 2 bars alone.
