Well i was going to add some more last night about how i feel the witch trials would work, but was waiting for a response, but here goes.
I feel it would require evidance of witch craft(scents), and require the witch to be in the providance town center to punish them (Makes it even more risky to come to town as a witch). When you have the witch in the town center and a scent from the abuse of the dark arts, you should be able to put them in either a dunking chair or depending on how serious the witchcraft scent is, maybe burning them directly on a cross.
I am unsure on the tiers of witchcraft scents, like with normal scents you have from the ability to only track(knocking someone out), to revenge or even TbC, summon only etc. Each scent has its own attributes and such, this should also be done with witchcraft scents, the petty scents will allow little punishment why the stronger the scent (using more complex and dangerious spells) could even cause perma death of the witch.
I feel it should be very hard to kill a witch using these punishment methods, however they should take serious damage to biles, statistics, glutton timers etc. It would take co-ordination with other players to fully punish a witch, making sure they have gathered plenty of evidance against them, ready to send them to the trials.
For example, The Witch comes to providance, Player A has a scent of the witch, and notices she comes to town. He quickly uses his scent of the witch on the priest? and the witch is arressted and sent to the dunking chair. Each unique additional scent you bring to the dunking chair of the witch, causes the chair to be dunked, Causing serious damage to the witch, -10 biles, -5 x2 random stats, +10 hours to glutton timers etc, Basically a witch version of our stocks, but x100 more lethal, but requires unique witch scents to cause a dunk each time. So collecting hundreds of witch scents and saving them would become a hobbie to punish witches. If the witch is dunked enough times (lots of unique scents have been provided and she has been dunked +10 times), this indicates she is clearly a witch as she has not died from being dunked so many times, and now is moved from the chair onto the cross. From here i feel it could be a community effort to either kill or release the witch, however if a maximum tier witch scent is brought to the cross (A witch murder scent), the witch is instantly executed without a vote.
EDIT: The witch is in the chair for 24hours, and not enough scents are brought forth to have the witch scent to the cross to be burned, they are released, with just the punishment of the stat reduction from the dunks.
I could futher expand this suggestion or fill more in / make it an easier read, but ill need to smoke a few joints first.
Feel free to expand on this suggestion.
EDIT: I need to think of how, but it should be possible for a non-witch to also recieve punishment of the witch trials, but more of a false positive, but would require normal pilgrims to drop witch scents. Maybe this could be done with a curse from current witches ?
Example : Witch curses a raider with a curse which causes the raider to drop witch-craft scents instead of normal scents. The Raider goes on a rampage leveling bases, and knowing this the witch follows the raider from the backrow, collecting his "Witchcraft scents" he drops from raiding etc. The witch then quickly give the evidance to a friend, who waits in town to punish the raider as a witch.
This was apparent normal diversonary tactics used by witches during the times, to get non witches punished causeing innocent bloodshed, which gave the witches even stronger powers. This could be a requirement to unlock Level 3 of witchcraft, requireing you to get innocent blood spilled as a witch.(Could be used as part of the End of the world, JC spoke of in expiditions)
EDIT: Maybe this will ensure raiders to use the priest to cure them alot more often, most of all before they go on a raid.
PS: please excuse any spelling errors.
