Internet Protocol addressing used to be fixed. One computer, one address, and if it was connected to the Internet, that address was effectively immutable. Someone was screwing with your system? Block that IP! That hasn't been the case in quite a long time now. Even before Network Address Translation, multiple systems could share a single IP. NAT just made it simple to set up and configure automatically so thousands of computers could share a small address space. Once IP v6 is fully adopted, NAT could/should become history, though I doubt it'll get dropped because it helps add a bit of security and anonymity.

It's not a dumb suggestion, but it's like trying to kill termites in your house with explosives. You do as much damage as you're trying to prevent. When you're trying to run a game or other form of commerce where you rely on nearly everyone connecting through a NAT hub somewhere, blocking an IP address means you could be blocking out thousands of potential customers. One can argue that blocking out known proxies would help, but the same situation occurs as there are a lot of people behind monitored networks or with low encryption standards, and proxies help hide the traffic from prying eyes.

Sorry for encouraging the derail. Hopefully my little rant will educate a few people. Maybe they'll get a bit more interested and dig a bit more on their own. At the least, maybe they'll understand why it doesn't work.

In addition (continueing the derail :( ) most people where I live have a mutable IP: unplug your modem and you're given a new one by the ISP. We have to pay extra for a fixed IP - in this scenario IP blocks are quite literally pointless.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

IPv6 will more then likely never be fully adopted unfortunately. NAT is also not a good security practice at all nor does it keep someone anon.

What ever happened to the pen and paper and sending rude postcards and remaining anonomous.

The good old days of the poison pen letter.

As technolgy moves forward, we as a culture move backwards.
