If you read my post, you would see i mentioned the most likely object in his hand will be a Sieve (for sifting materials).
Will most likey be what the boulders will be turned into(even JC mentioned saving them), crushing them up, then putting them through the sieve, to get gold dust etc.
I could be wrong, but the helmet, googles (used in mines), birds (used in mines), a new mine cart, its huge mining update so i would still guess its a sieve.

Makes sense. I suppose that is gold dust first item 3rd row.
It looks like the mining helmet might be able to shine light. As for the googles, I can't think up a purpose, unless it's for ore production rather than mining itself.
Thirst item, second row appears to be a horsehoe crab. Which would be awesome.

In this picture you can clearly see the new item in question.
It is clearly a prospecting sieve / pan, and a mining helmet.
