Default Client vs. Custom Clients

Postby JohnCarver » Mon Dec 22, 2014 9:53 am

Greetings Salemites,
As part of our "Tutorial" month (Currently targeted for the Feb Patch), we also hope to be tackling the issue of the default client. We have no intention to try to 'compete' with some of the flashy stuff out there in the custom clients. However, we do agree that the default client could benefit from some much-needed love when it comes to improving both first impressions AND functionality. For all those who wish to help us identify the issues here please feel free to jump off your custom client for 30 minutes, switch to the default, and then provide a list of the things you 'couldn't live with'. I'll monitor this thread overtime and pull suggestions I think are reasonable into the OP. If you see a suggestion in the OP that has already been pulled up, there is no reason to suggest it again.

Thanks for the help. I'll start out with one of the things I think is the biggest issue:

*Default Mini-Map Size is too small. Should be larger, or have sizing option.
*Additional Hotbars.
*Better Player "X" Contrast.
*displaying purity of items when alt/shift/ctrl are pressed
*leveling tool (ctrl+L in latikai)
*ability to tell if particular inspirational has been used in the current study session yet
*a better chat UI.
*Display unlocks from skills as Text overlay akin to "Entering Town" messages.
*Notification when Kin Logs on.
*include the hotbar for the hands/purse/back
*Always display purse silver
*Increase distance to zoom out.

The most thing which annoys me is the isometric cam.

On my first playing of Salem when the Beta codes were given I played on Enders, I liked the client on H&H thus I decided to use it on Salem. Now that I am back on Salem I decided to stick to the normal client in order to be able to provide good tutorial vidios in the near future without confusing new people as to why their screen looks diffrent from mine. There are only three things I miss nearly everytime I play:

Animals on the minimap - So I can see a little flower all the way over there but I cant see a bear thats right in my face? I can understand maybe not having crickets, bunnies and snakes on the mini map (two of those you can hear anyway, though I would love to here the snake rattle, like when you find it under a log, in much the same way as the bears roar)

Moveable camra - I like making videos , this game is really beautiful with its twisted charm, thus I really miss not being able to get particular shots with the standard client.

Hotbars - What I would not give for atleast one more hotbar that I can move out the way of my chat window.

Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Default Camera is too bad. Default client already has freestyle cam (":cam sucky" command), so we simply need a corresponding checkbox or something to enable freestyle cam in options.

Trees, placed close one to another, are pain, because you can't see anything there, including your character. It's a good practice to make objects invisible/less visible if your character is hiding from camera behind these objects.

Minimap should be both: bigger and draggable. It means I want to scroll map to look behind the edge.

Your character should be more contrast to minimap background, and it should be top layer.ATM, your X-spot is hiding behind closest object icon.

Client should remember windows placements.

1. displaying purity of items when alt/shift/ctrl are pressed
2. leveling tool (ctrl+L in latikai)

While you are on it, we could use some additional goodies, not fixed with custom clients:

1. ability to tell if particular inspirational has been used in the current study session yet

I'll update the list later

Some of the items i like and would love to see in a Default client

1. The colour coding of people on the minimap (friends green /enemies yellow etc)
2. Moving the scalp score/bonus to the equipment screen
3. Adjustable icon size, i dont use the pretty icons because they overlap each other and look like a mess and hide other things. Basically i would like to make some icons smaller.
4. Preview Design mode, now i know this isnt a must have thing., but how many times have we all gone i want to place a house here and then drop it and walk around and drop say a shed near it to see what itll all look like. Right now i have to zoom out and do a hack job of copy and pasting to get a little idea of what itll look like.

That's all i can think of for now.

a better chat UI.
At the very least the kind of stuff I implemented (highlighting channels which have unread messages), but hopefully also tackling the issues some of us have with too many channels open - possibly a scrollbar or something - putting channels with the latest messages on top - ...

I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

My list includes:

Display unlocks from skills as system messages.

Not just display purity with shift etc, but have the option to display always with a check box.

Check box to display the humor numbers.

I'm still on the fence with animals on the minimap. I'm leaning towards no.

when you log in type :cam sucky
