You could use a system a lot like a scent. Have the map allow you to track the spot, but be somewhat vague with the arrow. You could then require the map to dig up the stash. Equip a shovel, then click with map in hand on the spot. Maybe the map will show an X on the ground if you get close enough, similar to a mine node. I like the idea. Would open up things like buried treasure.

Where would the scent drop? Obviously not at the dig site. At the owner's leanto/claim? How long would it last? In this way, we're back to people not being able to randomly stumble upon the treasure, which isn't too big of a negative on it, but I kind of like the idea of anyone being able to loot it from random dumb luck or instinct.

Well, I guess I was thinking more like a dowsing rod. You would hold the map, and there would be an arrow that bobbed around vaguely showing you the direction of the stash. And, like everything in Salem, there should be a chance that someone can get your map, and steal your stash.

Yeah, that was one of the ideas I had, but again, that would stop it from being taken by random player x with or without a map. Not a huge deal if that wouldn't be possible, I just think that adds more spice to it.

Well, You could add something like that with a Treasure Hunters skill. The skill would reveal X's on the ground, and also show you whether or not a stump has something in it before opening it. Just brainstorming..
