DarkNacht is wrong, and the number of accounts per player is probably something like 1.5-2.

soo, how is he wrong exactly?
you canot accuratly calculate, or count the number of players in an MMO.
are there 4 players from that 1 IP?
1 player with 4 accounts?

how about those 200 account from that 150 IP's?
maybe some ghave 2 players behind 1 ip and some 5 and some just 1.

as such you are guestimating which is by its very definitipon not accurate, but approximate (even if you guestimate exactly right you wont know that it is)

soo, you can indeed NOT know the exact amount of actual human players in ANY online game where 1 or more players can be behind 1 IP or 1 player behind 2 IP's

darknacht is right.

See, you're not thinking about the problem. Just because game companies don't attempt to accurately count the number of players doesn't mean you can't do so. Could people cleverly come up with ways to get around such census techniques? Sure, but what's the point?

The count doesn't have to be perfect. It only has to be within a reasonable margin of error to be considered "accurate."

in that case i accept a margin of error of 4000 players
salem has 2 active players

im accurate.

yer just butchering the meaning of accurate.
what is wanted is an approximate player count.

Why? Other than for your entertainment, what is the value or benefit of having any public player count at all?

Correct. A long time ago Loftar put the average accounts logged onto by players at 1.3. Most of us here on the forums use multiple accounts when we log on but the vast majority of players only use one account. Also it measures accounts, not characters. When you switch characters it doesn't count as a new point.

When they took over and before they went to a daily account log on count it jumped from 130 to around 150-180 on at a time. When they switched over to the daily count it was at around 500-550 daily users with a low of 450 daily over the 4th of July. It climbed to around 750-780 daily around Sept and then dropped after labor day, due to school starting I guess. It's been down since the Tribe, the Rabbits and the Pirates all quit or were killed to the 600-650 range which would put it at about 200-230 people on at peak times and maybe 450-500 individual players on daily.

The people who know what to do with those numbers have a pretty sharp advantage. Just financially they can be used to figure out cost efficiency, saturation, and price. Salem is just algebra in motion. Number of active players is "X"
