Hidden Stash

Postby Xelsol » Mon Dec 01, 2014 3:05 pm

Not sure if something like this was ever suggested, but with alt vaults no longer being a 100% safe way to keep your valuables from raiders soon, I thought an alternative method of keeping valuables safer than a chest in your base, but not 100% secure like an alt vault would be nice.

So how about hidden stashes you could "build" somewhere out in the wild and when you do, something like a screenshot of the minimap is added to your inventory. That treasure map could act like a key to reopen the stash or have copies made. This way, your treasure is safe unless you get raided, and even then, the raider doesn't have immediate access to your treasure, but given enough time, they could track it down.

I don't know how difficult it would be to have the treasure map object bring up a portion of the existing world map, but meh, it's just a fun little idea.

i think this is funny.
you could even incorporate this in a treasurehunt game you could organise for people.
\just put 2 wss or so in a place and spread around these picture copies!
maybe even sell them for 10 silver each make a possible profit on em.
and many other ways to apply this!

i like it!!

Would be cool to hide stuff in an oak hollow, which you can't access as an inventory, but only through the dialog box.

Alternatively: Since a destructible structure, like a hollow stump or bush, wouldn't work, as anyone to stumble across a stump they couldn't access would know it's someones stash and they could destroy it, and an indestructible anything could be easily abused, maybe just a normal container of any liftable type simply buried. Having the map in your inventory gives a visible indication on the ground, and you dig there. Instead of lifting a pile of dirt above your head from digging, you lift the container that was buried. Digging and burying obviously leaves dirt spots that will have to fade away with time with the regrowth of the surrounding biome, so for the first couple of days of accessing it, the spot is noticeable to anyone passing by and if they find it suspicious enough, they might dig it up themselves. Obviously, you could dig the surrounding area to mask the exact location, but that will just make it take that much longer for the dirt spot to fade.

In other words, the map in this case isn't a key, but just marks the ground. Could also act like dowsing rods if creating a screenshot of the minimap just isn't possible, but I think that makes it too easy to find.

I like this better myself. Giving people some reasonable opportunity to find it seems fair, especially if someone can take your map. It might also be fair to give them a map if they kill or ransom you, or something else? Maybe just the ransom. Instead of giving money or in addition to the money, you could offer the location of any buried treasure.

Now obviously, this would be a matter of "Do you want this money, or what's in the MYSTERY BOX?" You might have total crap in the box or it might be worth less than X percentage of your bank, or you might have nice, event clothing, a lot of silver, etc.

that is actually a very interesting idea. Like buried treasure or something :p
Darkness is unknowing, Light is knowing. Shed light to the Darkness to transform it into knowing. Thus it becomes Light.
Darkness is the absence of thought.

It would be a great mechanic to be able to hide stuff like this. It should be possible to find the stash by mistake, not like with mines, how you NEED the dowsing rod to see it. If you happen to be digging in an area then you find what is buried there. I guess this would go well with the archeology system?

I'm thinking of a scenario where a strong player (hermit) buries an insurance policy somewhere near providence so they can get setup again if they die. It should be possible for someone else to [randomly] dig it up.

It would be great to have some noob find a dozen metal chests, full of some advanced players restart supplies, while digging.

Well, you wouldn't need the map to find it, but you would need it to know its exact location. The problem is, the owner could just destroy the map if they didn't need it in their inventory to find/access their stash. So maybe the map in general is a bad idea, but not having any clues other than recently dug ground seems like it would be a bit too safe. Meh, I'm starting to see a lot of holes in this idea. Thread needs someone smarter than me to close them. I still like the idea, I just can't think of a balanced way it could work.
