I suppose we assumed everyone knew by now that the mines have walls just like the server has walls.

Yeah, I remember chief uploaded a vid about it back on Plymouth:

This makes more sense tho:

You can clearly see that the purple arrow is alot longer -> so you'll get a better average purity there.

This is why the earlier Civ games (before the hex grid implementation) cost 1.5 to move diagonally, even though the distance is more like 1.62. Of course, since we're talking about from the center of the square to the corner, the distance is more like 0.81. Maths, why they so hard?

Just to clear up the confusion. Yes this Diagram from Judaism is how it works, with the exception that the "Circle" is smaller. I.E. the "max" purity you can get falls a hair short of even the straight server wall. The only difference to mining to a corner is:
A) There is a lot more tiles out there when you get there that are "max". and

It is reasonable that you could 'exhaust' all the "Best boulders" on the server wall on a straight edge, but there are I believe a few thousand "best boulders" on the corners.

That all being said, your distance caps at 80% Purity. The remaining 20% is a luck roll that is influenced by your Civ Mining.
