Does this actually have a use? And while I'm on it, just out of curiosity, are pine nuts only gettable from those squirrel things?

You get pine nuts out of pinecones...
Just right click the cone to extract the nuts

It will give a "remove scales" option when you right click a pinecone, I don't know if you need a specific skill.
