The NY Times has a couple fairly good articles about the basics of Ebola and the latest outbreak:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/07/31/world/africa/ebola-virus-outbreak-qa.html

And what happened with Patient 0, and how he manged to get here from Liberia while infected simply by lying:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/10/09/us/is-the-us-prepared-for-an-ebola-outbreak.html

Perhaps our government doesn't want to do it due to expense, but I think a 21 day quarantine for anyone coming from that part of the world is a good idea right now.

Let me remind everyone that this isn't the first time there has been a massive ebola outbreak. Last one occurred in the 90s, and we very well could have a cure for it if anyone would bother trying to fund one. Certain economic powerhouses are all too busy making money off erectile dysfunction pills rather than working on better antibiotics and antivirals. (You Europeans aren't safe from the blame on this one.)

Also to note: there was mass worldwide panic over SARS, too, and it ended up being (relatively) nothing on the pandemic radar.

Third note: there were travel restrictions put in place with AIDS for a short while. Ended up being completely unnecessary and a waste of everyone's economic and tax dollars.

unfortunately i bet magicman will be the first salemite to **** his guts out from ebola

also whether or not this spreads to a blight like level or not is one thing, and another is that there are already tens of thousands infected and dead that would not be that way if the local ***** had not decided to loot the hospital.

furthermore, the mid 90s case had like 500 total cases with a lower mortality rate, there are already over 10,000 documented cases and the fatality rate is above 70%. that is because in 1996 a bunch of god damn "misunderstood youths" did not loot the ***** hospitals.

While Ebola is a serious disease, and something not to be taken lightly if there are reports of it in your area, I disagree with the idea of cutting off air traffic; to me that's like putting out a grease fire with a bucket of water, you might just make the problem worse.

Think about it, there's plenty of other modern countries out there aside from America. If people who try to go America to treat their infection are denied, they'll probably just go elsewhere. Britain, France, you name it. Or they may even go to a slightly better but still ****** country such as Russia (legitimately or not). Imagine what would happen if there was an outbreak there? Or even worse, they could use a 'backdoor' to get into the US or other modern countries such as through Mexico or down from Canada. Then you've got a bunch of people entering the country who may have Ebola that wouldn't even be on record! Most of these people would be disappearing into the poorer parts of the country, crowded cities and suburban ***** where the infection could spread much easier.

Scary stuff. Still, since I live far away from Texas, I'm much more worried about getting my guts mangled on the road than by a relatively rare virus.

Edit: Oh, but don't let me get in the way of a good scare right before Halloween. If you really want a medical horror story, here ya go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza

It's basically the Terminator of lethal diseases: constantly evolving, morphing, and adapting in its bid to destroy the human race.

To clarify: are you talking about quarantining just the infected cases in America, cutting off air traffic from Africa, or completely cutting off all traffic to America from anywhere?

i am not going to fall into your ploy of "lol what about people from other countries maaaaan"

there is a highly contagious disease that kills most of the ***** people it infect and it has already infected thousands, the first logical course of action is to stop travel from those regions for non citizens and require a 30 day quarantine period for returning citizens. whether or not someone can fly to another infected country and then leapfrog to here is irrelevant. you still block the majority of threats by blocking direct travel and a 90% block rate is better than zero and you are a ***** moron for even attempting to debate it.

I wonder if that virus withstands colder climates
