Mine Support

The ring around the support -- does that show how many tiles it will support or does that show how far away I have to place the others? (meaning will another be able to be constructed within the ring of another. . . overlapping support, etc)?

The ring shows the safe area where no cave-in can occure.

You can overlap your mines support , I think it's better to overlap one tile just to be sure : with circular area it's easier to overlap otherwise some tiles can be half-protected and I don't know how it works then.

they can actually still happen within that area, it's just far less likely.

i want give you advice, build it 6-8 tiles between each .
However there a chance it can fall down when you dig boulder with low mining skill and placed zone of mine support.
