This game being on steam early would be terrible for the long term, because of the current state of the game many new people would most likely be discouraged and quit, whereas if we waited until the game was considered ready by MM then it would stand a fair chance on the free games list up on steam or other similar things

Y'all know about the steam playerbase. If you ain't easy, you are bad. If you're bad, no second chance. This should not be rushed.
You thought I quit.

Ok,good input everyone. Let's keep the discussion going-

How can John Curvey Carver and crew make this game have a grasp on beginners and keep them from quitting early on?

They have already stated in their Development Roadmap that they plan to add something akin to a newbie learning zone called Shipwreck Island:

Shipwreck Island: How make Fire??????
A completely new early game experience to help the new player learn a few skills, and gain a few proficiencies before being cast into the harsh world of Salem.

The system is planned, they have just not added it yet because keeping the players they do have, and having a working and fun game for the new players to progress to, is far more inportent at this stage of development then getting new players to join and stay. At the moment we are all just guinepigs.
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

I am very much aware of this. But, what would players like to see specifically and what do players think would help the most?
