How do I fill a Barrel?

This is a noob question, I know. But guess what? I'm a noob. So how the heck do I fill a barrel with water, or liquid, or whatever else I can put inside of a barrel. I just spent four nails building the darned thing and don't know how to use it. LOL. Also, if I can only fill/remove liquid to/from the barrel, is it only a convenience item? (don't have to walk far to get water).

I assume I need a bucket?

I tried a clay pot once, but it wouldn't do anything when I left-clicked it, then right-clicked the water. I couldn't put it in my hand either. Not sure how to fill it up to wash mushrooms. bah.

Okay, so it turned into more than just one noob question, but still. . . cut me some slack here.

You need to left click a container so it's on your cursor, then right click on the shallow water. Your clay pot should've worked (it was a fired one, right?), so I don't know what went wrong, just try again and report results. To put the water in the barrel, just have a full water container on your cursor and right click the barrel. As for uses for barrel, besides water it can also store flour or oil.
