BEWARE THE FEARSOME SKUNKAPE!
(basically bigfoot with down syndrome).
Na, all kidding aside, and forgetting what Wikipedia says, there are indeed a lot of creepy, legendary creatures crafted by the imaginations of the colonial era. Some practically puke nightmare fuel like the Hidebehind, a creature which waits in ambush behinds trees, grabs lumberjacks, and then eats their intestines (while they're still alive). Still, many others just seem like any other animal, only weirder. Slenderman sticks out to me because he's supernatural in nature, and more creativity can be employed based around his mythos and abilities. I certainly don't think that Salem should just go through Creepypasta stories and start throwing their monsters in them the game, and should indeed focus on actual legendary creatures of the era, though a mix would be nice.
And even if Slenderman is never even considered, there's always this ***** thing:

The Jersey Devil, who started as a Native American legend. Sleep tight.
