Premade map with random features.

Postby trungdle » Thu Sep 04, 2014 7:55 pm

I have an idea of the world map being made as a replica of North America, much smaller scale if we need to, with rivers and lakes and mountains and woods... We can make the darkness on the west so that the "westerner" will be that "outlaw" as in real life. What do you guys think :)?
You thought I quit.

No thanks.

It'd require the mapgen to work with a template image which is probably more work for the devs. (Not to mention mapgen is actually pretty tricky to get nice results)
It'd also require a map reset, again no thanks.

I personally prefer a fully random map too, a real map would probably be rather boring as gameplay goes (large scale biomes, little rivers by comparison). This could be remedied by adding enough randomness within the shape but at that point there isn't much to gain from doing it. It'd be the same map just with a few major landmarks, not enough to warrant a reset.

To make all, or even most of NA fit in the game it would have to be shrunk to the point that it would no longer be interesting, besides it would eliminate some of the more interesting things that you can find on a random map.

I think it would be good to see more of the features of a continent in the next map, but it shouldn't be an attempt to copy North America specifically, rather try to include more of the features that are suggestive of a continent.

I think having the eastern coast be much more complex would be good, have huge indentations like the Caribbean that bring the ocean right into the first layer of darkness if not deeper, fill the sea with islands the size of some of the larger lakes we already have which take take upwards of 15 minutes to sail across. Have mountain ranges that run across the whole map in chains that are really require the higher level climbing skills to cross. Rivers that penetrate far into the darkness and which take hours to sail down and which connect vast areas of the map into watersheds.

JT had a very nice map with a large mountain series of mountains that bisected the map and some very significant lakes and river systems. The new map seems very patchy in comparison.

Yeah map of JT was definitely much more interesting than Roanoke one. Didn't explore Plymouth much, so can't really comment that one.

Agree, the map need more variation, the map just look all the same, in JT we had giant areas with just one biome, there was an nice island inside the mountains too, my old group called it "holly land" hehehe. I remember my old claim was in grassland and i was mad because it was hard to find a bear, but now all the biomes are mixed and all the same.

More variation pl0x.
