I don't make games but I am a developer myself and I have a decent enough idea of what client-server means, ways of making things like that possible exist.

Anyway, the thread was about mailing letters and items and we are derailing it.

We have established long ago that it wouldn't be practical with the current implementation of:
1 - boston porting
2 - item scents

I think we can leave it at that.

Again I disagree.
A way to mail players that doesn't involve player crafted items would very much come in handy to get in contact with people you only know from memorizing.

Okay, I see there is a lot going on here.

My initial thought really just went towards a letter system, because the only way to communicate is either the Forum (which is not bad) or via chat ingame. But it is not possible to drop a message if someone is offline.

Also I do not understand why it should not be possible to find a solution for

A) a letter system that involves created products
B) a way to leave a message at a claim, or pasted to a leanto (simple way with nail and paper)

For B)
In the claim menue of the claim stone there could be a checkbox for "allow messages". If that one is checked, at the edge of the claim there could be a clickable Mailbox shown to other players. People can write a message there, but it could be necessary to have paper and ink in your inventory. The message will then be provided to the players mailbox (could be in Boston, or on the claim), who will be able to collect and read his messages when online. Maybe it would be more easy if the receiving player does not actually receive an item, but a ingame message in a message center where all incoming (and outgoing) messages will be stored for later. So there would be no physical item created from writing a letter, just items would be consumed and a message from the server would be created. The server automatically knows whom the claim belongs to.

JC,

is there any chance to have a message / letter system ingame in the future? This is not about item trading, but purely about communication with people who live in different timezones and therefore seldomly meet each other.
I would prefer a system that involves created items.

Possible Items:
Mash [made from wood choppings/or used paper, boiled with water in a cauldron or copperpot] --> item
Filter/sive [Made from metal and board] --> tool
Wet Paper [made from pulp/mash in a trough] --> item
Paper [made from wet paper in a drying frame]--> item
Ink [made with the alchemy table and birch bark, berries, water, bottle]--> item
Quill [Made from turkey feathers]--> tool
wax [made from bees wax and tree gum]--> item
Signet ring [Made from copper, stone]--> tool

The potential new items are marked in red.

The system in H&H of simply having paper that onto which one could write a short message worked surprisingly well, many people would even put a basket outside their claim as a kind of mailbox. Maybe we could start with something minimalistic like that and then and then grow from their.

Yeah, paper would be much nicer then the current renaming keys system for leaving messages.

I think signs work well enough for the time being, however, we are currently working on a paper system that will better facilitate leaving notes.
