But is it worth it?

A new player that has proved that they are reliable and hard working by supplying a town with things that they need but would rather not produce for themselves is much more likely to eventually be accepted as trustworthy and useful then someone that just asks a stranger to let them in. And many towns have supplies to trade that might as well be gold to a new player but are worth little to the town.
Would new players really want to work their asses for someone instead of just playing by themselves? Wouldn't you be suspicious against someone who is determined to get into your town?
Who would be willing to put more effort to get into your town - some noob looking for people to play with or enemy spy looking for a way to destroy your town and get a good haul?
Its not that new plays would work there asses off for the town, its that towns need things that new players can provide and new players can get a huge boost from trading with a town. A town is much more likely to let in a player that they have a strong trading relationship with then some random and the new player can benefit from the relationship with the town while proving that they are hard working and reliable. Trading relationships between small towns and hermits was the basis for my current town.
While there maybe a few raiders that are willing to go through the process of acting like a noob, trading stuff to a town for **** that they likely don't need, and establishing a relationship with a town and then going through the weeks of trial member status, where the town will likely want to see them logged on consistently and contributing to the town or they will just reset the trial status or kick them, just to loot the town for some **** that they could likely have made on their own in that time, if they have an established base, but most will not. And even then precautions can be take to prevent them from getting access to any particularly valuable stuff.

Yes, my approach is the slightly more paranoid one.
