Apparently it is quite easy to avoid getting hassled by the Chief. All you need is a stonehedge or two, and maybe a couple braziers. He is defenseless against the even semi-defended. At least, if you have 2 walls, and a few braziers, it'll take him several hours to break in, so you have plenty of time to log on and repair the wall before he ever gets in.
