So let me get this straight...

Postby DirtyOldHobo » Mon Jun 02, 2014 7:44 pm

So, I was part of a stream of this game, with probably a couple dozen people at peak with over 100 people watching. We made a nice little camp over several hours; plenty of storage, leveling up skills, even started stuff like farmland and the like. Its getting late, so the streamer, and most of the people, slowly trickle out. I do a bit more scavenging for things, bring it back to the three or so people still at the base, then log out. No sooner than about 20 minutes after a message on the streamers forum pops up, and apparently some person thought it was a good idea to kill the people still around and destroy...well, more or less everything.

From reading the forums this is what I'm getting out of this; There is some silly 'treaty' thing going on that is more like a protection ring, where the people who are part of it kill people who are not? New people who hardly have any idea of what they are doing? If you really like the game so much that you get this much into it, tell me, what is the purpose of outright KILLING people who are still trying to figure out what to do, besides chase them away? Its like you want your favorite game to fail or something. I'd say you should be ashamed of yourselves, but I don't think it would affect you as...well, you're going along with this silly thing in the first place!

I'm not even sure how many of the couple dozen we had playing will even want to try now, knowing that there is something as toxic as that in the game. A possible influx of people crushed by some dumb, abusive 'treaty' that forces you to be with it or against it before you even know how to fight a cricket, let alone a high level player.

We don't care about you or your friends. We don't cater to people's inability to play the game at our level. It's a game of life and death and you were not prepared.

You resumed what Tribe and treaty are very well. Most players just don't intend to do a **** against them for multiple reasons being time/will/power/etc. As a sandbox players do whatever they want so the Tribe can indeed do that as much as they want, and since they can, they will.

You talked about how much they like this game. Liking this game doesn't mean they care about other people liking it aswell. And that said, I'll let you know that their leader has quit it long ago, after ***** to the devs about how bad the game has became. So it's even possible that they make people flee from Salem on purpose, so the devs wipe it, close it or something.

Anyway, sorry for your bad experience. Good luck if you wish to keep playing.
Trust your enemies more than your friends. Your enemies will never betray you.

I think you got the best possible welcome you could get in this game.
It's a permadeath, forum drama game.
If losing a few hours of work on your first day in the game makes you lose interest, and move on, so be it. Then this game probably isn't for you.
For some people though, this incident would only encourage them to browse it's forums, find some incredible drama posts to rofl about, try again, and dig into it deeper.
This is a niche game that caters to those people.

Next time you try this game, if you still dare, come prepared with a healthy dose of paranoia, and start building somewhere out far in the wilderness.
Also, don't take candy from strangers.

I don't mind dying. Its a permadeath game, I get that and accept it. Its the utter BS that is included. From reading up a bit, what I get out of this is some guy stealing a hat from another guy, so a third guy takes revenge by...killing new players? What? That train of thought makes no sense. If I went out fighting, I went out, and thats part of the game, its when people forcibly drag you into things you had no part in that shouldn't be part of the game and outright discouraged, because all it does is make sure the game hardly gets tablescraps when it comes to people actually staying in the game.

This is a very narcissistic game and, unfortunately, that does mean that well established players will prey on newbies for the sake of an afternoon laugh. It's nothing new or uncommon in games, you were just unfortunate enough to get the brunt of it right away. I hope that everyone at least had fun in the time that they played and that they find enjoyable ventures if they've moved on, as most of you probably have. C'est la vie friends.

slightly off topic..
From an evolutionary perspective, humour, and laughter, evolved as a coping mechanism for reacting in a non aggressive way to a situation that does not make sense. In that train of thought, good old absurdism is probably the most ancient of senses of humour. Maybe humans did not evolve in Africa after all, but in the UK.

I can see it being slightly harder to appreciate, if you are on the recieving end of the joke in this case. But quite simply, if you can just see this as a valuable lesson, you might just have a good time here, if you can't get over it, there's 10 thousands of games out there that have new player protection mechanics.
