Yes, you do have a bit of a dismal outlook at times, and I don't count it among your many qualities.

First of all, I haven't given up, much like I have never given up on Haven. I am not done with the game yet. I am simply prioritizing Haven at the moment.

Secondly, I wouldn't trade it for the world. We have learned a ton, had the chance to implement at bunch of interesting systems in new ways that we otherwise probably wouldn't have, developed an entirely independent asset -- and a game/lore/universe that I have a lot of love for, believe it or not! -- had the chance to learn 3d development, met a lot of people along the way, and a bunch of other interesting experiences. Who knows what an alternate universe looks like, but I trust fully that providence has her reasons for taking us down the paths she does, and have no regrets.

Don't want a publisher?

No, not really.

Paradox has been very understanding of us, and I strongly doubt that we should find a better publisher under the sun. Hence, I deem it best that we stay in the shade for the moment.

Whatever.

Don't "whatever" me. Where is the pattern? Point it out to me! Work your own way through the decision points that I have laid out before you and explain exactly what it is that we should have done differently. What part of the offer we were made to develop Salem is it that you don't understand? You make it out as if we just drop and run at the drop of a hat, or whenever we get bored, when the fact of the matter is that most everyone else were perfectly willing to can this game entirely back in May, and that it is only by our good graces (and their understanding and benevolence) that it is still running and has received updates since.

Our time preferences are anything but high. We take a very long term view.

If you hadn't done it Haven would been a lot further along, and probably switched to 3D and all that other stuff already.

As far as I have read up on the discussion, that's entirely wishful thinking of haven purists. (my understanding) jorb and loftar were offered a paid position working on a game much like the one they loved. Furthermore, they worked on and reworked the code base of haven for a large part. It is my understanding that -were they not offered this opportunity- haven would be off much worse as the devs would have to have found another livelihood which would probably have left them even less time for haven. It was an opportunity they would have to have been mad not to have taken.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

I seriously doubt Salem's cash shop is making enough money to cover their living expenses. So it's back to square one, except a couple years older.

Not enough to cover their living expenses perhaps but I'm sure they made a decent buck. Even I spent around $50 or so on this game, someone who in comparison to many others barely put much effort towards actually playing.

It's not the destination that matters, it's the journey.

I agree, but it's been a pretty bumpy ride.

Finally, You speak on subjects that you understand. How bumpy is this ride in comparison to lets say, the ride on an old dilapidated scooter?

I would rate it unpaved after torrential rain.
