enjoyed it for some time years ago.
entropia dealt it first blow and community finished it off.
maybe you can trick the time with updates but people will be... people (or you can use any of insults so common to this forum, its not lackin those).
what i am saying is basically in 21st century you dont need to ask "is it good". takes under 1hr to down anything and try it yourself.
its not 1994 when i had to use stolen modem and hacked academic account to play Forest Edge with (at least) 7 seconds lag.
fyi 7 secs is how long it takes for info to travel from/to Moon, so imagine what kind of conversation i could have with people.
what shadowbane had was opportunity to build your own base (design it from nothing, make shops, place guards, walls etc), fight in large battles and sieges and character development was not linear. sounds good even today. doesnt it ?
it had its flaws ofc. and not few.
graphs got dated, ppl left, bunch of players from asia that stayed took key points on the map restricting fast travel and devs called quits.
was one of the best of its time and would be better then many today, but i doubt some dude and his wife can revive it its full glory.
even if they did it would have to be made better to stand a chance against new kids on the block.
games like that need population to work and it wont get it coz "man, this is ugly".
and even if it somehow got the population it would end the same - no meaningful territorial wars of multiple city-states but total "kill on sight any trespassers" chaos.
like many games before and after shadowbane was made by decent devs around decent idea but they didnt count on human nature. that people that played it would behave like children. "im gonna play with this toy and when i get bored ill smash it so none can play with it after me".
we would have to stop being human for such things to work. but, hey, we are working on that
emotions are something to be ashamed of and Efficiency is the new God.
almost done evolving(?) into machines.
lemme point out somewhat obvious example: in salem if you "cry" about your character died then you are laughed at , but if you have biggest biles then you are respected and proly even feared. altho why would one fear pixels eludes me. so you see, its kinda sad but, afaik in salem only 1 faction has put forward some kind of manifest, idea .... call it what you will and its only 2 articles. 1) sign the treaty 2) some poorly thought joke about right to kill bears. others have zero idea what they stand for unless we count hatred for 1 (2 doesnt invoke wrath coz its pointless waste of ink).
dont really see why one should relegate self to any of those camps. they are just so damn boring. devoid of any creativity. theres not even a group you "love to hate". theres noting to hate. i am, for example, unable to hate boring people. annoying ones are just annoying. i need convincing evil to hate it. not some improvised surrogate.
players complain that defences are strong, raiding is this or that, mechanics are lacking, dont wanna risk characters bla bla.
in ancient ages 2 conflicting sides would march into the field with their champions in front. maybe champions dueled to spare simple warriors. maybe they didnt. maybe they fought a short and bloody battle before one side lost its cool and broke. maybe they just cursed each other across the field and went home w/o blood spilled.
i guess its gonna be somewhat strange but not many people died in such battles anyway.
winner would spare lives, get taxes, treasure or whatever and defeated would honor that new situation until they decided its time to change it in another conflict.
it took a lot, and i mean a lot for someone to just go and raise a city to the ground. why would any sane man do that and destroy a chance to profit from the fight?
but ofc thats very hard to do in video games. coz no1 will stab you and cut your head of for ruining his chance to be rich and respected. no horde of seasoned murderers behind you. just few entities that are content with a amusing post or tube clip that kida glorifies them.
i can go on forever like this ... but whatever you play be creative and youll get your fun. when it becomes boring move on. if you are playing one game for years theres proly something wrong with you. no, not proly - gotta.
