Do carcasses decay

How long can you leave an animal carcass lying around unbutchered? Does it poof?

It poofs when the map tile unloads, which usually takes about 15 minutes after the last person in the area logs off.
Put your carcass in a house or into a sled, cart, leanto, or rowboat, and it will not decay.
