Could not locate server.

Postby Jalpha » Wed Feb 19, 2014 2:13 am

When attempting to log into the servers I get the notification: "Could not locate server". This appears in red text above the login text fields for the game client.

I can only use my laptop to access the internet at this point in time and additionally the internet access I have is through a college campus and has a range of blocked IPs. The game files I'm using on this laptop are also quite old and attempting forced updates to the game client isn't working.

What I'm trying to establish in order to simplify my fault finding process is whether or not there are any changes to the client code which are necessary before connecting to the new server is possible, and whether utilizing a proxy will get me through the college ISPs excessive safety precautions. Some method of bypassing their security will probably be necessary. (Hypothetically?)

I am willing to change the operating system to a Linux variant.

I'm aware that this would all be much simpler if I could get information directly from the provider of the college internet but they are assholes. I can't even download Java...

Latest word is that wipe will occur late Wednesday/early Thursday... GMT +1 (Stockholm, Sweden)

I'm EST... (GMT -5) and candidly, I have not even tried to log in. I don't know for sure; but the wipe is either happening or imminent. I suggest you try again in 24 hours... and then every 6 hours after... could be a whole new world!

Oh god, the canoe!

Hit me up after the wipe and I'll get you a new one (assuming I can log in ever).

Try pinging the server or doing a tracert to see what the connection status is. It could be a DNS issue, either locally (the college/college's service provider) or somewhere along the chain. If the host can't be looked up, both of these will fail with "unable to find host" or something similar. I'd have to ask loftar if this error can occur under any circumstances other than DNS/connection error or server down.

If the IP is blocked for some reason, you'll need to contact campus IT services. Depending on what firewalls are in place and security software running, Seatribe's server may be blocked automatically without the campus IT doing anything specific. It has been an issue in the past with one or two security programs.

Okay, that's really quite helpful. A tracert will show me if it is, as I suspect, the colleges DNS which is the cause of my ails. I didn't think of doing a tracert because I don't have the Salem servers IP address. Anyone happen to know what it is?

I'm beginning to suspect strongly that the college ISP is the problem. I'm trying to get access to a VPN which I'm hoping will circumvent their enormous list of blocked IPs.

Thanks Pjortr84, But I don't even get the first hop showing up.

I get a "transmit error 1231".

In short; ***** this ISP.

I remember this problem 10, 15 years ago, back when colleges often had all of their traffic routed through the same gateways, but nowadays, most schools, etc with public networks for students use separate gateways from business traffic for both bandwidth and security (even if they both go out through the same pipe).

And sorry, didn't even think of posting the IP address last night. I should have when I suspected there might be a DNS error or a block.
