They should just ditch the sub model and leave box sales in place. This works out well enough for Guild Wars 1/2, Defiance, and others. Developers still make cash, and players are happier and more likely to stick around when they don't have to worry about a sub.
Alternately, or in conjunction with this, they could make a tiered subscription model. Trion does this with Rift, and Sony Online Entertainment does this with EverQuest 1 and 2 - I'm sure others do as well, but these are the three I actively play.
EQ1/
EQ2 have three tiers - Bronze, Silver and Gold, and it works out fairly well for them, their subscriptions for EQ2 jumped back up after they switched to this. I know that personally, I am more likely to try a game, and pay for it, if it has a try before you buy option (even single player games, I love demos. I refuse to shell out 60$USD or more for a game that I don't know will run well, or is fairly bug free).
Either way, on the topic of "What to play while we wait", I'm playing a lot of Gnomoria, and Starbound, too, I'm sure.
