Oh, also, you can destroy fences, hedges and walls. Even on claimed land. There's no way to "keep them out". You will always be a target, no matter what. What you have to do is discourage attackers.

When I am wandering through the woods and I happen upon a lean-to with baskets sitting beside it, I open the baskets. If there's random inspirationals and food I leave it be. If I find a metal shovel and 5 nails, I take them (this has also happened to me BTW :D ). There's nothing to stop me.

If I see an unclaimed house with a split-rail fence around it an nothing interesting, I pass it by. Not worth the trouble just to satisfy my curiosity (and risk the home owner being inside). On the other hand, if that house is surrounded by freshly-planted fields and barrels, I'm going in. There could be god knows what in there I may want. Maybe super cabbage seed!

Now if the house above is claimed, I pass it by again. I don't have trespassing and probably never will, and I don't want to leave a scent and get summa-ganked.

I think you get the picture. The more attractive your property the more you have to discourage a potential attacker. You have to give them the perception that what you *might* have in those cupboards isn't worth punching through four walls while brazers fire at you. And again, it's about their perception, not the reality. If they see 40 garden sheds on your property they assume you've got tons of something in there. Even if they are empty your attacker won't know that until they have already penetrated your defenses. After all that work they're going to take anything of value they can.

And some people are just ***** :D

I built and ran a smelter on unclaimed land for two days. Then one morning I come be-bopping up to the mine with my arms full of lime and see the smelter is bright red. I understood it was damaged but not why. I tried to repair it and it said I needed brick. I arrived back at the mine with an inventory full of brick just in time to see the thing disappear.

So yea, decay ticks are *VERY* random.

Turns out I should have spent that first 500s on claims, not nails and iron. But that's Salem for you. You live and you learn, and then you die.

Sorry but that's NOT Salem, is a game that deletes your objects that you built and maybe even paid (real money) for them.
I'm surprised that someone just say "It's Salem" and "objects randomly disappear" and be satisfied with it.
If the developers need money for the project then do a campaign to raise more funds or something like that.
If it's needed to clear the map from time to time very well, but not buildings! Or reduce the map, whatever!

Is it just me who think this way on this issue?

Whether or not that player paid money to get the silver or items doesn't matter. It's a part of the game. I've played games where you need to spend 30-50 USD to compete on a tournament level and you might have to destroy those items over the course of the tournament. It's a part of the game. If you don't want to spend your silver on items that can be destroyed, spend it on something that is hard to destroy and you can keep (relatively) safe. In the end, it's still all the same pool of silver, though, so does it really matter if you spent it on a hat you keep forever on an alt or on some iron bars to build your first or tenth ironworks?

The reasonable expectation is that you do get some play time with the money you spend. This isn't like buying comic books or trading cards where you can expect your purchase to be as safe as you can keep it in your house, bank vault, etc. This is more like spending a few dollars to get a week subscription. In the end, the money is gone either way. One way, you have something worthy only of the recycling bin to hold in your hands, the other, you have nothing at all to hold in your hands, but still have the same intrinsic value.

As far as decay not being mentioned in any of the guides, you should probably take that up with those that wrote the guides or maintain the wikis. A person could write up the known decay mechanics and have someone else post them to the wiki, too.

I understand what you are saying but it's different from YOU decide to destroy something or someone destroy/still your things and another thing is the game delete that thing randomly or on unknown mechanism, as you said.
I just made my comment because in this afternoon a ore smelter that I was filling with lime and some ore simply disappeared. Ok it was not in claim terrain but that shouldn't be reason to be deleted by probabilities or something else. This is just my opinion. :)
Meanwhile, can someone guarantee that in claim land this doesn't occur? 100% guarantee? 90%? :)

I had two smelters in decay that I didn't repair because we had placed a bell on the area. When the bell got down to 9 silver, I think, the smelters decayed and were gone. My advice is to repair anything and everything  to be on the safe side.

This is a nice tip.
In another words: Maintain your buildings repaired or they will collapse (deleted). This phrase is worthy of being on the wiki. :)
Thanks.

Just put a claim down and then you don't have to repair them.

If you build them on a claim in the first place, they'll never need repaired. If the claim comes after the building, it's safest to repair just to make sure there isn't any lingering damage.

I reread through Sevenless's guide and didn't find a thing on decay mechanics. I'll see if I can come up with something and edit it in in the next few days or see if I can catch him on Skype or email over the next week or so and see if he's still willing to update his guide.

If you write up a detailed analysis on Decay I'll upload it to the wiki if you want.
