Of course it's not "needed". You can play the game perfectly fine with only straw baskets.
It is about what is more fun and comfortable, about what has better gameplay value. As always.

I'm holding out hope for a wagon pulled by an ox or horse. Said wagon would hold more chests than a sled, and would move faster - maybe just faster than walking - slightly slower than wandering.

If you had a paved road - the wagon would travel at wandering speed - or slightly faster.

This would be awesome. I also think there should be additional types of paving and the higher tier the paving the faster the wagon would move on it.

this will be very good indeed, but i agree for the increased speed only for paved tiles (puch people to make roads) and keep the basic sled speed (why you should drive a sled anymore if a wagon can do that faster and better? in that case sleds will be outdated, and that's not a good idea)

and, last of all:
for horse you need to tame them, lure them to your stables and feed them (like 25 turkeys is a turkey coop, with increased storage ;))
that will be awesome :D
i'm the one who run :|

Sleds would be significantly cheaper than a wagon. Factor in the cost of your animal too and sleds look even cheaper.

Besides humans aren't that strong so pulling heavy sled is slow. Well huge animal(s) does not slow down in the same way.
