Is there anyway to get glass panes besides buying them from stalls?

No, getting them from stalls is the only way.

Unfortunately they're quite expensive, so I don't even bother with cupboards anymore. You can just create alts to store stuff anyway. But if you want a useful house - i.e. a house that actually increases storage space because it has more than one floor -, you can't get around them.

I do tend to overuse altvaults as well, but one does need a certain amount of storage.
I'm not going to waste time altvaulting cabbages i'll be making into crumbs within a day anyway. I like to have a stock of water buckets and flour bags (about a shed of each) handy for random cooking, and generally I try to keep a stock of general building supplies (and even though boards go into signposts, it all stacks up quickly). Throw in a seed collection for everyday farming, and you can easily fill a cupboard or 10. Once silver stops being a big issue (argopelters), cupboards are much easier and faster to spam than sheds, and are movable after building them. My vote is still cupboards.

For other things like churches or houses, you can't go around the glass panes, sadly. Having no alternative to weigh against always makes me sad. Give us wooden churches!
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

You're right in saying that putting basically everything on alts isn't exactly practical, but after being raided a few times, I decided I can live with it :)

Well we all know silver isn't really a big issue in this game.

while it isn't really for any settled player, grinding together enough glass panes for a church without argo hunting characters can prove to be ... tiring.
Unless you have a cotton plant and some workers, of course.

Now THAT would be a lot of work. I think I was making as much cricket hunting (pre-AI adjustments) as some others were doing mass cotton farming. I add that parenthetical in there as you could stomp 3-4 crickets at once and kill them all before that.

Bear hunting can be quite easy with 2 players on 40-50 biles, and if searched for in the correct sub-biome of the conifer forest and create a planned route to clear out spawned trash(across a little 3x3 or 4x4 mini-map tile section), and killing bears, you can easy farm a good 8-15 deer, with a good 4-8 bears tossed in every hour or so. Using in conjunction of a small cotton farm, you can amass a good fortune as a low level player.

EDIT: Values adjusted after thinking back on it more.
