War. War never changes. (Fallout Online)

Fallout online
Not sure how many of you heard about it. It's a community made game/project. It was made by russians then went open source and was being polished by few more groups. Some servs were opened, some were closed but game survived many years already. It is still is being developed. (I'm not exactly sure when it was released for the first time but it was some years ago.)

Game is set in fallout 1 + 2 world. With same graphics as original fallouts. Game engine got a bit overhauled to support higher resolutions + some ui modifications were made.
It's set in fallout world but remember it's mmo. Here you are not Chosen One.

In FO you will do PvE and PvP. (well even if you choose to PvE only. PvP will come to you anyway).

Features:

PvE:
Fight vs enemies(npc) that you know from F1 and F2 (solo or in group) in world map encounters.
Team up with other players and guard the caravans while they travel from town to town(for caps and exp)

Clear 'dungeons' such as necropolis vault, vault 15, glow and more (not instanced)

PvP:
while doing all the above mentioned in PvE. You can get ganked(or gank yourself) other players. Get their goodies and life. (moving on world map at same square as other player have 'encounter' might trigger event of you finding him- depends on outdoorsman skill (happens quite often. Would say around 25%-33% of your all encounters on that grid)

Create or join a 'gang' and fight for control of some of the cities. (few cities are guarded: hub, junktown, vault city and ncr but rest is free for all)

Craft your gear:

Combat is either turn-based or real-time. If it's your encounter it's set depending on what you picked in options. Real time combat is more dynamic but much more chaotic. It's much easier to win with NPC in turn based combat but as you spend much more time in encounter. Chance of some other player entering same encounter is much bigger ;)

Unfortunately there isn't permadeath in this game. Just full loot. Still for fallout fans it should be worth a check.
From what I noticed there is some forum drama going from time to time too. Community is similiar to this one in size.

Just dropping this post in here because there will be wipe at 3rd November (around eu evening time) so it'll be fresh start for everyone.
- 3.11 At evening, we will begin our second test session.
- Not later than 29.11 The another wipe will happen, and depending on progress, we will begin Our first real game session.

Would say it's good time to check it.

I tried Fallout Online on 3 different servers. First time would be around 3-4 years ago, then I played it from time to time. Came back to it lately.
Pros and cons and my opinions in no particular order(just my 2 cents)
It's fun game. Getting materials for anything isn't extraordinarly hard. Although if you want to make/craft gear with better bonuses it will take some time(as it's just random chance each time when you craft something+your repair skill and proffesion level taken into account). Some classes are stronger than others(especially in 1v1 in real time combat-Big Guns pewpew). Sometimes it's hard to do any dungeon(nice loot in there) cause of big organized groups hugging those places. But well..you can join gang yourself. Fallout wasn't made to be MMO game which at times is visible =)

In 1-10 scale I would give Fallout 1-2 points less than I would give hnh or salem. But..it's Fallout! :ugeek:

PS. There are other Fallout servers. Each one of them have different pros and cons. Only played on FO2 and Reloaded myself(Reloaded seemed to be easy mode hence I quit after few hours althrough their world seems to be more alive cause of so called vs encounters where different npc groups fight with each other). Server list: http://fonline-status.ru/en/ I guess it's all preference where you start. Just remember about wipe. It happens on FO2 only :p

PS2. They say that 'Wasteland is harsh'. To that I say: 'Not for seatribe gamers' ¦]

The wipe will bring a new server that'll last for about a month then get wiped again. I'd hold off until more things get ironed out.

I used to play Fallout Online... I ***** hated the Russians.

Its permadeath and got too many random encounters (groups of Russian players).
Lol, the many times I got killed, wasn't funny anymore :D.

The Russian people are strong. Fear them, Rune.

Which serv was that? I don't recall there being permadeath on any serv I tried :(
(i have to admit that fallout online with its current map/engine would be kinda dumb with permadeath because of how encounters work + size of map)

From what I noticed majority of players on both Reloaded and FO2 are speaking english with just small ammount of cyrylic being thrown here and there. Russians seem to (mostly) stay at their russian serv. That might change a bit with ru and pl languages being added to client files :p

Feel free to catch me on irc when you'll decide to join. I'll bump this thread when real session starts.

Well, you really shouldn't be trying to steal members from this community. It's not like Salem is a big game anyway with people to spare. Why don't you go and advertise somewhere else? Maybe a game that you hate. That way you'll have a win-win situation :) Lol

Just remember rolling new characters for some reason.

is this the new fonline 2238? last i heard it got shut down and the source code was made public.

was a fun game to mess around in, i played it a bit prior to salem. and yeah, like all free games you had about a 500 to 1 ratio of russian hackers/cheaters/scripters/zergers vs normal players.

was definitely not a fan of how you could not find people in the "wild" except by random encounter triggers, because of that all pvp was done at the towns unless you randomly triggered a pve spawn that someone else was already in. first week after a reset was always fun for me, most retards were still running around with crappy weapons but by the end of the first few hours on the first day i was pick pocketing the good stuff off of mutant patrols then annihilating entire groups of people in town

Rumor has it that after Zenimax develops TESonline for Bethesda and if it's a success, then Bethesda's going to let them develop an actual Fallout Online next. Of course TESonline Beta just started and is schedule to go live next spring so Fallout Online wouldn't be ready for a year or two from then at the earliest.
