Random giant pits found in Plymouth

Any idea what these are about?
I cannot come up with any explanation... How did they dig so steep? What is it's purpose? Where did all the dirt they dug out go? I don't see any other disrupted dirt anywhere near this area... That has got to be hundreds of wagon loads of dirt, apparently vanished into nothingness.
My only theory is that they're building a giant cache with only one possible entry point: a one tile wide slope. If that isn't the reason, I cant see why anybody would spend time doing this, or build a plank fence around a random pit.
I'v heard someone else seen a pit like this as well somewhere else.
