That's the Last Time I Leave My Gate Open

So, feel free to dissect this crime because I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it!
I logged on today, and went for a stroll around my homestead, and returned to one end of it to find a few of my chests were strewn over the front of it. Yippee, a robbery. And I thought this was a quiet neighborhood. I quick check of my belongings shows:
* A crate full of Savage Charms and a bar of soap (Ouch.)
* A snakepurse full of silver was emptied (Ouch? That's ~1300 silver at this point)
* A Whispering Snake Skull (Ouch. I had that since my first week of play.)
* 6 Bars of Iron (0% Pure ofc
. So more of an annoyance that a setback)* My gun (lol?)
* My Stocking (
Two months later I still can't figure out how to get a stove placed)all missing, and my token this-is-a-safe-neighborhood-so-w/e Brazier significantly damaged. Though they left me some salt in one of the crates, so that was sweet of them.
What gets me is that a quick tracking of the scents shows that the perp is at least an hour away, and might have even come by boat. If so...wtf? One possibility is this was done by someone who's still pretty much a noob; (s)he missed at least one decent crate, couldn't even destroy one brazier, and didn't even bother to kill me using the scent that was like two feet away from my claimstone. Not to mention that none of my structures were harmed besides the brazier. But maybe someone targeted my base / planned this out (though lol @ that idea too seeing as there are like four giant and idle claims within 30 mins of me*), because they must have used a boat to get away (because I think they carried off the crate of Savage Charms) to a claim that was pretty far away. They seem to be at their homestead at the moment. But it wouldn't really make sense for this to be planned; I think the only reason they got in in the first place was because I left one of the gates open. If they couldn't destroy one lousy brazier they probably wouldn't have made any progress vs. that gate, which again leads to me think it was a noob. But noobs don't travel by boat to a claim over an hour away just to steal a few items? And it was planned, it was planned poorly given that my claims has at least 20 scents over it when the crime ought to have not left a single one.
I was hoping to wait a week until my murder char is ready, which would take a little longer w/o those Savage Charms but w/e I have a smelter, a mine, a lime quarry, and an anvil. I’m kind of worried that if a noob didn’t do this than I might run into some problems seeking my revenge, namely having my murder char killed by a much stronger character. So: Does this seem more like a professional job or…?
