Fish Traps

I'm looking into fish traps, and I'm curious as to where to place them? I have access to coastline with sand, as well as a river with both shallow and deep water. The wiki says, "Both the location and the bait seem to matter in how many and which fish you catch" - but doesn't go on to give any examples. The Haven and Hearth wiki gave a lot of examples as to which fish lived where and how to catch them, but there isn't much help in the Salem wiki.

Any advice on where to place my trap, and what to stock it with?

Also, should I place a claim over my trap(s)? Can you place a claim over water?

Thanks for all the advice!

They must be placed in deep (swimable) water. A cheap but effective bait is wood choppings.

I personally like to use seeds, because you only need 1 seed per slot, so 15 seeds fills a trap. Also the claim is up to you, they will decay like any other building, and people can take your fish if you leave them in there and someone wants them.

If it wasn't changed from the beginning- you can't place the trap on a deep water(It must touch the shore on 1side at least).
I didn't see a difference between lake and river placing, but you may see that traps can influence on each other, so you can find the optimal placement by changing the place after each cycle(like those 15seeds/wood choppings dissapear). For e.g. using 4traps I'm cathching about 20fish each cycle.
Traps decaying very slow (I've never fixed it) and you can fix it with any fiber
