How do I reduce crime debuff?

I had to kill someone who was harassing my friends, I never killed anyone before and I have evidence against them and summoned them to kill but the fortunate providence post says "If you have evidence against a perpetrator, you can use those "scents" to reduce the crime buff versus the private claim upon which said perpetrator has his homestead."
how do you do this? using the evidence on his leanto, claim, or body just says he is already dead, can you only clean crime with murder evidence?

You can use it on the perperators claim, it won't do much for example waste reduces with around 2-3 crimes. Bit of useless and by the way your crimes will still leave scents tho.
