Trading Safely with a Shop

Hello everyone,

I've tentatively come back to Salem. :? I made the mistake of being too shy to ask for help before setting up shop on the Trade-Winds when I wanted to make some Silver last time I was here, and made a mistake in sharing my Homestead Secret to make things more convenient for buyers. Someone ended up spawning at my base.

My question is: What are the safety issues with sharing your HS on the forums when setting up a forum shop, and how do you avoid them? I'm in need of silver and would prefer a forum shop to soliciting in Boston all day, but I don't want to take any more risks... (than are necessary).

Cheers.

Your trader is homesteaded to Leanto, not a claimstone. Then share it's homestead secret. It's as simple as that. Someone who just stands by a barrel all day in Boston doesn't need more than 5/5/5/5 or any skills. Just make sure you dress them up to look professional. No one wants to trade with a black robed newbie.

Okay, so using an alt would be wise in this case. I know most traders do that, but... I guess I just didn't have the foresight back then. Nor did I realize that assigning my homestead to my claimstone would yield disastrous results! Ah, well; I'll give it another go, and with improved security.

:) Thank you, everyone, for the prompt replies.

There's no problem using your main as the trader, however I would recommend not living on or near a claim made with your main. If someone memorizes you they can tell if a claim belongs to you. If the identity of your main is something you wish to protect then this is another good reason to use an alt.

The reason your homestead should be set to a lean-to and not a claimstone is that people can spawn to your homesteaded claim with alts if they know your homestead secret. The consequences of this should be obvious.

Always demand silver first, you have a reputation to maintain, they do not. Never scam anyone. Ensure your HS is legible and easy to use, this will help avoid scammers posing as you with a similar HS. I'd also recommend adding as many people to your kin list as possible on your trader to help with this.

Best solution... make your homestead a lean too on your claim.

Only with claim stone (as homestead) can someone spawn on top of you.

Also if you commit a criminal act.... if you claim is lean-too... justices must have access to your lean too for summons, otherwise they only have to be on your claim to extract retribution.
