why is this timber pile rotted?

I made sure there is 5 tiles open space (plus a little) in between the piles and any obstacle.
The piles are in a completely paved, walled off area, it is not possible for any wildlife to get near them.

The pile I just harvested to the left of the one I am standing below gave me 100% well dried boards.

But now this pile is giving 100% moldy boards, at least the first 24 boards harvested were all moldy.

How? I did not come near them during drying, nor did any village member.

EDIT: finished harvesting it. The full pile yielded a stunning total of 3 dry boards. wtf?

EDIT2: According to a village mate, tumbleweeds can jump over makeshift fences, so that could be the culprit. Didn't know that, guess I'll have to start replacing that fence then.

With the makeshift fence a tumbleweed is most likely your culprit

I thought the spacing didn't prevent mould, it just prevents it spreading. Each pile still has a chance to produce rotten boards, that chance is just increased by objects within the five tile spacing, and it won't spread to piles outside the 5 tile spacing.

At least that was the word a while ago.

Tumbleweeds and other foragables have nothing to do with it. Neither do animals or people. Structures that can't be moved spread mold. Other board piles spread mold. Structures that can be moved, like chests and whittler's benches probably spread mold, but that's unconfirmed.

You did it right, you just had bad luck. You get random ticks to have a board go moldy while the pile is drying. If you get unlucky and mold hits early, the mold will spread throughout the pile. If the mold hits later, it'll only go partway through. If you get lucky, you get no mold. Building board piles in the right places away from other structures and especially away from other piles just makes the chance of mold smaller, it doesn't eliminate it.

Hehe I guess it was bad luck then. And good luck. The other 10 piles I had drying were all perfect :)

Your H/N might matter... before he bailed we had a guy at 225 H/N... and all the piles he made were flawless.

It was touch and go up to about 180... but we all noticed a definite improvement...and (at the time) a total loss of wood chips when he passed 200. It wasn't just dry boards... but his planed board ratio was over 90%

You have no idea how any of the mechanics of this game work please don't post myths in help. H&N effects the chance to get planed boards but not moldy ones.
