Anti-Tribe Tactics

Postby ezgoezit » Tue May 20, 2014 10:14 pm

Being that I am still quite new to this game, I know it would probably be both strategically and tactically sound to join the Tribe. When new to a game, I know you should take the easiest path first, then come back later and choose a more difficult setting. That being said, based on what I have read so far here in the forums, I am not interested in joining the Tribe.

I know there are others out there that are both skilled in this game and have managed to avoid the Tribe so far. It occurs to me, there are some that are not exceptionally fond of the Tribe and might be willing to impart with some of their hard-earned wisdom to other like-minded individuals.

Please PM me, or post any tactics you think would be helpful to get the most out of the game, while avoiding the Tribe and their ilk.

So far, I have been building humors, proficiencies, base skills and exploring far west (around six or seven hours west of Boston). I haven’t expanded my base much at all, in fact, there is hardly anything there. I have a network of cached baskets full of singing logs, webs, tumble weeds another other valuables stored hours away from any settlements or leantos. I keep expecting to see at least some of my caches emptied as they are out there for anyone to grab, but so far, it hasn’t happened, which speaks to how unoccupied the area I am in really is right now. I know as soon as I build a new leanto though, it will invite people to look around. I would like to enjoy more aspects of the game, but I also want to figure out a good risk/rewards balance first.

Regards,

Defenses are very overpowered, just get a town bell and build some walls and braziers and everyone will probably leave you alone, as long as you understand how they all work and build them correctly. Also the world is fairly big so if you hike out into the middle of the darkness, some where away from other towns, no one will probably even know you exist.

Joining the tribe is actually pretty difficult and if you're very new, you probably shouldn't try it.

lol yeah, just drop 2500 silver on a town bell! And what, 750 every two weeks?

Don't get a town bell if you're just a newbie living alone. You really don't need one. Be careful about joining an established town too. People in towns tend to die horribly.

Townbell is a nice thing cause it lets you to be more protected than without it (nothing on claimed by town territory cannot be destroyed without Trial by fire). But as was said- to keep it alone is a hard thing if you're not going to be a real hardcore player. Now it could be harder to find people to join you, cause it might be just "a wolf in a sheep skin" but not impossible if u can check somehow should you trust them or not.

actually, i find keeping a town by myself pretty doable..
just plant 25 cotton fields and pay everything with that :)
more than enough room for it in a town.

simple things to do are:
build walls from outside to inside from weakest to strongest, so makeshift on the outside then split rail, stone and finally on the inside a plank fence.
if you do further fencing make sure there is at least 6 square gaps between them so the damage wont spray over.

make enough braziers to cover the whole claim but dont let them fall inside each others ring of influence (the rings can overlap though).
also surround the braziers themselves with at least stone fence.

if you can make sure your claim owner never leaves the claim and use alts for venturing outside.

do not keep a mine inside your claim unless you are certain you can defend properly or you don't care :P
mines are good places for extra space, but since no one knows whats inside it will always look like a loot pinata.

if you EVER plan on committing crimes DO NOT make the claim stone you homestead.
also if you do set your claim stone as homestead never give out your homestead secret to anybody.

correct me if i am wrong people. and i know i dont cover everything, but its the least you can/should do.

Tip #1.

Don't live with or near other people.

I believe you can just erase your homestead secret and have it blank, preventing anyone from even brute-force guessing your password. Unless you're actively using it, this is probably the best course of action.

There's also a separate wiki that is not tribe maintained: http://www.salemwiki.info/

I'm not going to argue whether one is better or another, but if you're mistrustful of the tribe in general then there are alternative options.

Yeah, I've never understood all that about having a HS that's hard to guess. Mine is always something really obvious like my character's name. I just don't use it for more than 5 minutes at a time. If you're a trader or someone who needs a constant HS, trade with an alt that uses a leanto as a homestead.

Thanks for all the tips,

Is it true that ground leveling is a bad idea? (Easily detectable) I am having a tough time building without needing to level ground.
