Ask and answer any and all questions pertaining to Salem's game-play.

Question

Postby ezgoezit » Tue May 13, 2014 7:27 pm

First, I would like to thank everyone who took the time to create the videos and game guides found on this site. Having just started playing Salem last week, I have a hundred questions, though I am finding answers to most of them through game play and the various guides and videos.

That being the case; I will save all of the questions except for this one, until I have had a chance to explore the game more:

Considering the guides/videos were made a couple years ago for the most part, and the game has changed quite a bit since then, do any of the changes in the game have a bearing on the content of the guides and videos? Is there anything significant to know based on the current state of the game? (ok, I guess that was two questions.

Regards,

Likely yes, most of the guides will be outdated. We're trying to keep the wiki updated, and tribe seems to be doing the same with theirs, so your best bet is asking more advanced players or checking the wiki(s) and piecing the content together yourself :) Or just ask about any specific guide to see if it's still relevant, nobody can really answer such a broad question regarding all the guides/videos around.

Last February, the raiding system, gluttony, and inspirational systems all changed radically. Also, new things have been added. I've been playing for a year, and forestry and alchemy were added since I started. Also, poison mushrooms and waste claims for town raiding were added. Some serious and widely exploited farming bugs were fixed last year too. A couple new animals... I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff too. So, it's a pretty safe bet any videos more than 3 months old are very much out of date.

There are 2 wikis a tribe and an open one they have basically the same info on them but they both have different inaccuracies.

Also, most traders out there have their HS in the trade-winds and are more than happy to help.

The trade winds section of the forum. Most traders will give out their Homestead Secret publicly, so you can kin them yourself and talk to them whenever you want to trade something on their trade thread.

For a new player... my short list.

1. The primary developer Jorb- is not focusing on improving the quality or game play of Salem. Whatever you see- that's all you get. He's got another game that he's more interested in. Will updates come eventually- sure... but it could years. Keep that in mind

2. Defense changes. Mostly changes to braziers and wall defenses. Weaker walls can no longer cause splash damage to better walls. (Long ago and still true today- folks tried building 3 stone walls next to each other... only to discover when the first one was destroyed it did 75% damage to the 2nd... and the 3rd, etc... it was a like have only a single wall really.)

3. Use a better game client: Latikai or Ender... I support the first as having the most features; but if you use just the basic client... you will be at a disadvantage to every other vet in the game.

4. Tribe- avoid politics if you can. Tribe is the most dominant group on the server; but they are also the most hypocritical bunch too. They follow the mantra "Do as I say, not as I do". If you can kiss their ass, remain inferior, and give them whatever they want when they want it... you might survive them. Otherwise- they'll welcome you in...and then kill you off later whenever they feel like it.

5. Don't settle near Boston... Tribe will readily harass you if you do.

6. Learn how to use the map application- it will make a huge difference in your success. https://code.google.com/p/salem-map-tool/wiki/Howto (you will need Ender or latikai client to use this)

7. Never tell anyone where you live. Nobody. Because chances are they will show up when you are offline...and wipe you out. Tribe particularly... first thing they will want to know is where you live... so if you join them thinking to leave later... know you will be leaving whatever you build at that location... they will definitely come to clean house when you take off.
