Needs some defence tips

Could use a tip or two when it comes to base defences.
Basically I'm having trouble making a tree wall, how do you place the trees close enough that there is no gap, every time I try to plant next to a try it won't let me and I can't tell how far I can go out without leaving a gap. Using the Ctr L grid doesn't seem to be helping, any suggestions.
Also I have a paved spot but it won't allow me to place a wall end, any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here?
Thanks guys.

Trees now need a lot more free space around their planting location than they used to, I think the thinner ones take the least space, like birch or elm. You could try finding the minimum range for birch/elm, then planting the thicker trees at twice that space plus a bit of wiggle room. So that'd be two hazelnuts with enough room in the middle for a birch, and the hazelnuts will get a decent hitbox as they grow to maybe leave little room to get through, but it's pretty tough to block access with just trees from what I've seen. As far as the wall is concerned, perhaps the bit you're trying to connect it to was placed not snapped to grid and is overlapping with the last bit you're trying to build.

Do not bother trying to make a tree wall. Not only it is nearly impossible to do so, but an attacker with a woodworking set of clothes would cut through in less than 30 seconds.
