Could be that you missed one of the proficiencies for the skills, or that your maximum proficiency for one of the skills is less than what you need. For example Lore of the Lumberwoods takes 700 frontier and wilderness. Now, it's not enough to just have 700/500, since that just means you're over your maximum in terms of skilling up, but doesn't actually contribute towards being able to buy skills. To learn the skill your proficiencies need to be at , or higher than the required level for the skill, and then also be filled as much as they need to.

As for the looking under trees thing, I'm not sure if the basic client allows for that yet, haven't used it in a while, so will let someone else answer. One solution is using a custom client, like latikai or ender's clients. With free cam enabled you can rotate the camera holding down the scroll wheel or i assume middle mouse button.
Exactly 6.022 x 10^23 worth of Lach molecules.

1.
leveling skills goes in 2 steps, the first stepp is to raise your profincies high enough. You can raise profincies by filling them with study and then pressing the plus sign next to them, for Lore of the Lumberwood you need at minimum lvl 7 Fr&W and lvl 5 l&l end lvl 5 S&E. I understand from your question you already finished this step.
Step 2 is to fill those needed profincies again with study so you need to study 700 Fr&W etc., if you filled all profincies to the needed lvl you can buy the skill for free, this will consume all study you studied.

2.
You can turn around your character by pressing and then moving the middle mouse button. For me personally this does not allways work and is kinda annoying. Note that at the option menu you can also switch from camera mode, freestyle mode will allow you to watch from any angle and zoom out very far.
I think there was also a sort of camera menu at which you could leftmouse click to change camera angle, but I forgot how to pop up that camera menu and it might be latikai/ender client only.

edit: that camera menu might only exist in my dreams :)

here is a post of many mouse and keyboard functions, alllthough its not complete:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=507

1 missing for example is that you can ctrl left mouse click at the map to move to there.

the actions you want to master asap since they make the game so much more easy:
-rightclick foragebles at minimap to pick them up
-shift click items to put them in container
-shift middle scroll to put items in and out container/construction
-ctrl click to drop items on ground

some of these actions might be ender/lakitai client only, I never play with custom client.
