As of now do timber piles get moldy from each other? Do i need to place them at the same distance as i would with any other thing like buildings etc.?

The mold only spreads from timber pile to timber pile - it does not appear if there was no mold to begin with. Thus, if timber pile 1 is moldy, it will cause timber pile 2, which is within the 5 tile limit, to become moldy as well. However, there's always a small chance that timber piles become moldy, no matter if they're 5 tiles away from everything else. You should keep a distance of 5 tiles between every timber pile.
Edit: TL;DR: Yes. You need to place them 5 tiles away from each other.

I have made literally made 100+ timber piles alone on this map. if you want total efficiency on no moldy, I would to 6-8 away in all directions., have no paved area or trees or hills. those will increase the chances of moldy boards. Now you can put them on farms but put them in corners of the plots so you can still access the field plot. this will save space .

Yes paved ground makes it moldy, well increases the chance, Walking around them also does but not as much, so Id just place them all around your town/claim but on dirt and flat ground. Trust me I have placed over 100 piles on the new world alone all with good results if you follow what I said before.
