I had made a claim, which I need to be as long in one direction as possible (around 64 tiles). But I extended it to about 36 and it does not allow me to expand it further in that direction. Does it have limits, or do I just need to expand it in other directions to be able to expand more in that one I need?

Yes, you need to keep it within an aspect ratio of at most 1:10.
