Test tubes are your friend for anything before the final product, raising ingredients to as high a value for a certain element as possible. It's random and lots of stuff will downgrade rather than upgrade, but it's worth it. Don't get anything too unstable or stuff will pop. Use an alembic to bring down instability if you have time to spare. When you get the final product that you want to get as pure as possible, you can use the pressure cooker and the retort to toy with the elements and raise modifier a bit directly.
