Argopelter hunting guide

Postby Thor » Thu Dec 19, 2013 10:54 am

Greetings fine pilgrims of all 3 servers,

After acquiring the knowledge of agopelter hunting I've been asked numerous times how to hunt them. I decided to record myself doing a normal run of 14 skins and 7 beaks.
First I was going to share it only with those few, but let's help the whole community instead!

So what is argopelter?
- Argopelter is so far the hardest non-player enemy in the whole game, killing it has some very interesting rewards. It generally looks like the offspring of a goose and that Notre Dame dude. They spawn in Darkness under b: 51 (you can track your brighntess levels with CTRL + D).

Interesting rewards you say?
- Yes. Combining two dried argopelter skins, one beak and one oiled board will result into Argopelter Trophy. It's worth 250 silver at NPC stalls.

Whoa! That sounds like a really easy way to earn silver?
- Yes and no. If you can hunt them, then yes. If you haven't ever tried, it might be a bit tricky.

Tricky? It's not enough just to thurst my sword where the sun don't shine?
- Argopelters climb to trees and start throwing you with branches dealing highly variable damage, their range of attack is quite large. Tricky part is dodging their attacks while luring them into trees we want them to go, and hurting them when they are moving. You can't stomp to daze them so thrusting is the best way to maximize your damage input.

Alright so it's not that easy.. What kind of gear/biles would I need to get started?
- I've heard people do it at 40 biles (I don't recommend you try though). I recommend you get your biles and gear high enough to AT LEAST 3 or 4 shot them (Argopelters have 45 health). More damage will obviously help and you'll less likely get hit by their attacks. And for thrusting you'll obviously need a sword and fencing skill.

Here are some artifact suggestions:

Some clothing suggestions:

And here's a bit more in depth post of how to slot

Got it! Any tips before I go?
- Always use run for mobility and kill them one at a time. Just keep running next to them and they'll aggro eventually. When argopelter is in a tree, run towards the most favourable tree you want them to go to. If argopelter does start running towards the tree you wanted to, try to get between its path, thrust and run into opposite direction. If not, try luring it to another tree. Always keep your blood over 50 at least, if you get hit "critically" few times in a row you'll surely get K.Od. Also use Latikai's custom client for raider mode trees and gob paths (helps a lot).

You mentioned something about a video?
- Video can be viewed here. Quality is not the best since I'm not really familiar with editing or encoding, but you'll get the picture on how to hunt. Those who don't like dubstep just mute it, I deliberately recorded the music I was listening to avoid making a silent film.

I hope this helps people get started in argopelter hunting. If someone finds something to correct, leave a comment and I shall fix it.
Happy hunting, pilgrims! ;)

for the record: a more advanced method of hunting them is thrusting earlier when the tree they are going for is very far away. If timed correctly, you can thrust and run away towards said tree without obstructing the argopelter, not causing it to switch targets. Because you (with run mode on) can outrun an argopelter, you can hit it twice on its trip to a single tree. The timing is VERY tricky, though. Also (having only watched the first couple of minutes of the video), you often walk away farther than strictly necessary from the argopelter. Still, I guess it's a decent guide with good, supporting video.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Thanks for feedback, would be greatly appreciated if you'd share that technique via video though.

Should include some artifice loadout tips for people with humors and proficiencies on the low end.

Hmm, not exactly what I had in mind. People with access to those artifacts and clothes and the proficiencies to slot them should already know how to hunt argos. Something lower end but still useful would be better, for example abandoned cobweb for feral defence.

Argopelter hunting isn't something you start doing after a week or two of gameplay.
You grind towards your first settlement at first and set up a decent infrastructure to produce basic necessities like leather, boards, iron and crops before seriously hunting anything harder at all.
Making oiled boards and leather for Polished Buttons is basic stuff. Killing snakes for Etterfangs does not require high end biles. Making a Snakeskin coat takes maybe 1 hour (tops) of stump checking for dried skins.
Making iron for lockets is basic stuff. Even at CnD or AnC at ~50 we are talking about +50% success with everything I mentioned. There is no point slotting inferior stuff that is much more difficult anyways.

It's doable with 50 biles, which should be achievable in the first week. And the sooner you switch to argos, the less time you'll waste on crickets and other slow methods of silver gain, and you need a fair bit of silver to set up a proper base.

I say you make a video of killing argopelters with 50 biles ;)
psst, etterfangs have 20 feral defence
