Double fence?

Alright, if you're going to make a double fence, how many squares of space do you leave between the two fences? Can you build them right next to each other or do you need one square there or more? If you have to have enough space there to walk through, do you build the gates parallel each other or on opposing sides?

Are the gates weaker than a normal square of fence, or does it not matter?

if you have to leave much space between the two fences, I'll have to move my leanto, since I built too close to a river before I realised the consequences.

Also, how hard is it to demolish a leanto on a claim? Currently all my humours are under 20, lol.

It is up to you whether you leave space between fences or not.

If you do, you can repair both walls during a raid [1 square is enough for that].
If you don't, you can't repair them both during a raid, but if you build braziers or torchposts, and build even more fences, their range will cover more walls if they're clustered together.

The weakness of gates is that they can be demolished by 2 people in the same time.
You can prevent that by building another fence/stone hedge segments or braziers/torchposts on both sides in front of the wall, but so close that they will leave enough space for just 1 person to go trough.

Leantos are pretty weak. Moving them is pretty cheap as well.

I know this is a bit necro, but I want to ask some follow-up questions after finding the primary answer to my question about fence/wall spacing.

  • If I am am planning to rely on passive homestead defenses (torchpost/brazers and walls/fences) to give me enough time to log out/flee to boston and to discourage theft and vandalism, it sounds like there is no reason to waste the space on a gap between the walls, correct?
  • Also under those conditions, does it make sense (from a cost effectiveness viewpoint) to use a fence outside a wall? As I understand things, the brazers don't kick in until after the first fence/wall is breached.
  • Is there any reason to claim an additional tile outside the fence?

the more walls and brazier the better off you will be and your average thief wont waste his time. also build a wall of unfinished signs outside the wall. Having a large claim will help a ton also

Actually, I believe that leaving 1 tile gap between walls, and putting some braziers in it may be useful. After thief breaks the wall he would probably start nuking the braziers. However, if you have have braziers between walls, completely encircled by them, then raider would have to break additional walls to nuke braziers. Or will have to suffer braziers constantly attacking him

It makes some sense to use fence outside the wall, since outer layer is practically only good for triggering braziers

If you're going to leave a gap in between walls, make sure it's large enough you can get in and refuel your braziers. Not much point having them if they're sitting empty.
