[Jamestown] World map

Reviewing months of forum posts I see many false starts to world maps. Is there some politics? Were the 'posters' rewarded by having their maps used to find them and steal/kill them, and then they took it down due to anger? Were they posted on sites that expired? Traffic costs?

Not sure the root cause, but I've created a few new characters (5,5,5,5 biles) aka no loss if killed, and have been walking the length of map by using the settlement you are given (one free homestead) and then porting to town and walking back with the Ender client on/recording, then piecing the map together in that way.

I am willing to share this map, if others are willing to join me in this to chart the world. I note the location of the 'free' homestead is about 30-60 minutes out so it gives a good scope of the map. Sure you have to walk around rivers and go around 'larger cliffs' but if you are willing to pick up smooth stone or two and so forth it's easy to get the skill hiking, and if you make a larger effort at it you can learn swimming.

So ya, wondering why the maps are not available and if anyone is willing to share the story, I didn't see a policy against it, and if there is one please let me know.

Nobody has been around long enough to keep the hosts up for more than a few months at a time. It's not cheap (well, it is cheap, relatively speaking, if it's low bandwidth and all that..), and you need to get enough players willing to contribute map tiles.

Specifically, there is no policy against hosting maps. My personal requests on it are two-fold: if your going to commit to it, make it a long-term goal and be sure your going to stick with the game, and make sure that the data collected can be offloaded elsewhere if you do decide to leave or drop hosting.

Testing options of sharing. Seems public share google drive map be workable. Looking into policies as to what is allowed.

Here is a test link,
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5dFLu ... sp=sharing

If I can get this going and it is allowed under google drive policy I can have it sit for years and anyone can download it freely, which should alleviate any 'dead thread' issues. (also if you know of google drive policy before I find it, please let me know, I'd like this to be a semi-perm method of sharing)

Do bear with me my map is limited so once I get this going it will be ... somewhat lackluster, but I'll add cells/squares to it as I can, or as others find it in their hearts to share.

Plans: Jamestown only at this time, as I play there :D

I'm good for them announcing, as there is no accessible map at this time limited/partial, or any active mapping thread for jamestown I assume they are keeping it off the books for their own reasons. I am exploring an 'instant access' map that will build as I grow it.

I would love for them to contact me here or in PM in the coming weeks/months and I can give them my portions to their collective, though I will want to share said map with the forum. Free hosting is easy if the policy of the sharing site allows it. Still reviewing Google Drive, and their allotted bandwidth allowed hence my share link above (test link I'll update/edit my main Original Post once this gets going and ensure it is approved per policy)

Do you know the names of those who are doing the project? I don't mind contacting them, just having seen anything active, just some folks asking for money and others who seem to have expired URL links.

Maps are still available, but most of them are closed to the public.

Here's an example of mine (got most of Roanoke).

The reason mine is not public is mainly because of all the markers (lots of knowledge purity wise), but also bandwidth concerns.

Sorry for the tease.

I see a tool tip bar at the top, what is this program by chance? That can prove helpful in my venture, though yes I will be keeping a marker free map as to value concerns of privacy/purity raiding areas. I'm now debating keeping it 'spideweb free' as well, as some great folks have provided a few pms with IDs, and I may just have a semi-private 'full' map for those in the loop, but I would very much like a basic starter map for new players to get an idea of what to except in the radius of the 'main' town.

So ya, please let me know this map tool you are using, I only have one that has 'import/export' and merge.

It's not a program, it's a web based application using HTML, CSS (Twitter Bootstrap), Javascript (Google Maps API v3), PHP and MYSQL. Everything is (mostly) custom made by myself. There are however publicly available resources that enable you to quickly replicate the basic functionality. If wanted I can write a guide how to do just that. Keep in mind though that doesn't include markers etc.

Step 1: Mapmerger, http://forum.salemthegame.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5995. Put the program inside your Salem map folder and run it. You'll end up with a folder named 'merged'.

Step 2: SalemMapTool, https://code.google.com/p/salem-map-tool/. Read the howto first, make sure you understand how to merge maps and how to export them. You need the cut feature too when encountering map errors. While exporting only export the tiles, not the preview! You import the folders from the merged folder from step 1 and merge those together.

Step 3: Tilezoomcreator, http://sourceforge.net/projects/hnhmapoffset/files/. You need to have Python (2.7.5) and PIL 1.1.7 installed in order for the tilezoomcreator script to work. Copy the python script to the folder where you exported the tiles in step 2. Don't forget to rename the folder containing the tiles to 9. Read the instructions, customise the script and let it run. This will generate all the zoom levels needed for a google maps based map. Included within the zip is an html file that with only a few changes will make a local zoomable google maps application of your tiles.

Hope this helps someone.
