Bad home location?

I've only just started playing this game. Got a few hours in and progressing quite a bit but I need to get some silver now so I've found a few tips - ie, I need to sell things in town.

So the problem is that I need to walk from my shack to the main settlement, but I had no idea which way the settlement was. So I ported there and began walking to my homestead to get an idea of the direction to go... 30 mins later and I don't seem to have got close!

The question is... What do other people do when they settle far from a town? Do they walk in and spend an hour or more doing it? Or do you just set up a new home near the main settlement?. Or is there something else that can be done?

It is generally pretty infeasible to walk from your homestead to boston or back.
Boston is the one town everyone can port to from their homestead, don't confuse it with player-made towns. If you have a homestead on a leanto, just stand near it and teleport to boston. If you have your homestead set on your claim, you simply need to stand on a claimed tile (or be inside any building stnading on claimed tiles - including mines) to be able to port to boston with stuff in your inventory.

about making silver: I once made this post. It's been a while, but it is still applicable.

Thanks that's some good info!

I did think it would be a major flaw to have to walk to Boston!

I tried doing it once just to find out how far away I got randomly placed. It took about 7 hours going in a straight line.
